Brand reliability
Consumer-survey composite — JD Power · WhatCar · Consumer Reports. Same score for every variant of a given make.
Resale strength
100 − 3× annualised tangible-decay (COE-stripped). Fitted from each variant's asking-price-by-age regression then averaged at model level.
Peer set
Every same-segment model with ≥5 active PARF listings whose variants fit a depreciation curve. Practicality isn't plotted — it's a body-shape constant within the segment, so it would be the same for every dot.
Quadrants
The crosshair marks the segment median on each axis. Top-right (Safe Bets) is strong on both; top-left (Hidden Gems) holds value above what the brand reputation suggests; bottom-right (Bargain Buys) is well-built but depreciates fast — buy cheap; bottom-left (High Risk) is soft on both.

Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class — R172 / SLC (2011-2020)

Verdict

Successor to SLK R171 — M271 1.8L turbo + M276 V6 + M152 V8 (SLK 55 AMG) + M133 V8 AMG (post-2016 SLC 43). Renamed to SLC in 2016 facelift. Same retractable hardtop hydraulic complexity. M276 V6 carries the documented timing-cover oil leak + cam-sensor oil migration into wiring harness pattern (same as W205 C-Class). Cars 5-14 years old.

What's good

  • M271 1.8L turbo with documented Mercedes service — simpler engine. Boring durable choice.
  • Post-2016 SLC facelift with documented RHT service — facelift refreshed equipment + minor updates. Cleaner used pick.

What to watch

  • An M276 V6 with no cam-sensor wiring-harness work done — same as the W205; oil migrates into the ECU and can write it off.
  • RHT mechanism issues at viewing — same RHT hydraulic complexity.

Verdict

Mercedes SLK roadster — M271 1.8L supercharged 4-cyl + M272 V6 + M273 V8 (SLK 55 AMG) + M156 V8 AMG. Retractable hardtop is the gen-defining feature with hydraulic complexity. M272 V6 has the documented balance-shaft / cam-adjuster wear pattern (same as W221 S-Class). Cars 14-21 years old; aged-Mercedes + RHT mechanism complexity dominate.

What's good

  • M271 1.8L supercharged with documented Mercedes service — simpler engine. Sidesteps M272 balance-shaft concern. Boring durable supercharged 4-cyl.
  • Documented RHT (retractable hardtop) service receipts — RHT mechanism gen-defining failure mode. Receipts mean next-replacement is years out.

What to watch

  • M272 V6 with no balance-shaft / cam-adjuster service — same W221 framework. Catastrophic engine-out repair S$8-15k.
  • The folding hardtop slow, noisy, or failing to retract at viewing — gen-specific hydraulic / sensor failure. Repair into 4-5 digits at Mercedes labour.
