Price range
P75 → P25 of asking — the middle half of listings at that age sits inside this band. Outliers above and below excluded.
Down payment
MAS Notice 642 LTV cap applied to the age's median asking: 30% when OMV is up to S$20k, 40% above. Max loan tenure 7 years. Rows marked * mix both OMV buckets — we display the conservative 40% figure so the quote never under-states what a luxury-OMV listing at that age would actually require.
Availability
High when this age's listing share is ≥1.5× the model's uniform expectation, low when ≤0.6×, medium otherwise. Model-relative, so an evenly-spread model lands all-medium.

BARGAIN BUYSWell-built but depreciates fast — buy cheap, drive long.
Brand reliability
Consumer-survey composite — JD Power · WhatCar · Consumer Reports. Same score for every variant of a given make.
Resale strength
100 − 3× annualised tangible-decay (COE-stripped). Fitted from each variant's asking-price-by-age regression then averaged at model level.
Peer set
Every same-segment model with ≥5 active PARF listings whose variants fit a depreciation curve. Practicality isn't plotted — it's a body-shape constant within the segment, so it would be the same for every dot.
Quadrants
The crosshair marks the segment median on each axis. Top-right (Safe Bets) is strong on both; top-left (Hidden Gems) holds value above what the brand reputation suggests; bottom-right (Bargain Buys) is well-built but depreciates fast — buy cheap; bottom-left (High Risk) is soft on both.

Verdict

Successor to the curated Forester SJ — FB25 2.5L flat-four continues (chain-driven, no head-gasket era story), e-Boxer mild-hybrid added on some markets. Subaru's Lineartronic CVT in the SK is the improved post-2016 generation (better converter + software) — the gen-defining concern of the SJ era is materially mitigated. SK's main complaint is conservative styling + modest power vs competitors; mechanically it's one of the cleanest mid-size SUV picks. Same FB25 oil-consumption pattern surfaces on subset; modest top-up between services is normal not defective.

Decay

What's good

  • Post-2020 SK Forester with documented CVT fluid service — the post-2016 Lineartronic CVT is materially better than the SJ-era unit. Combined with 60k km fluid services, the long-term reliability of the gearbox is well-understood. Boring durable choice.
  • FB25 with no major engine issues + modest oil consumption pattern — engine widely regarded as comfortable to 300k+ km when serviced. Modest top-up between services is normal not defective; only a litre between services should trigger concern.

What to watch

  • FB25 SK Forester burning more than a litre of oil between services — same piston-ring sealing pattern as SJ-era FB25. Negotiate-or-walk threshold; modest top-ups are normal but multiple top-ups means long-term ring-pack work on the horizon.
  • CVT shudder / hesitation past 100k km with no fluid service — even the improved post-2016 Lineartronic needs fluid changes. S$5-9k for replacement locally; price in if undocumented.

Verdict

FB25 (2.5L flat-four) ended the head-gasket era that haunted the older EJ engine — chain-driven, no belt service, no head-gasket story. The Lineartronic CVT is the headline risk: 2014-2015 builds carry the worst failure rate (Subaru issued a USA warranty extension); the 2016 facelift onward materially improved the converter design and software. Oil consumption from piston-ring sealing is the recurring small annoyance across the FB25 line.

What's good

  • 2016+ post-facelift FB25 Forester with documented CVT fluid service — the converter + software updates addressed the worst of the early-CVT failure rate. A CVT-fluid receipt at 60k or 100k km is the signal the previous owner read the service bulletins.
  • FB25 chain-driven engine — no timing-belt service to budget — the FB25 ended the EJ-era head-gasket / belt-service pattern. The engine is widely regarded as comfortable to 300k+ km on regular oil changes.

What to watch

  • A 2014-2015 Forester with no CVT replacement or warranty work on record — the highest cluster of CVT failures landed on these two model years. A failure between 60-110k miles is the documented pattern; rebuild runs S$5-9k locally. Verify any Subaru USA warranty-extension work was applied if the car was imported via parallel.
  • FB25 burning oil between service intervals with no top-up paperwork — piston-ring sealing pattern across the FB25 family. Modest top-ups are normal; a litre between services is the threshold to negotiate or walk.

What's good

  • Documented head-gasket service + Subaru specialist — head-gasket fix paper trail.
  • XT turbo cult variant — collector status.

What to watch

  • An EJ engine weeping at the head gasket / losing coolant — gen-defining.
  • A tracked XT with no rebuild paperwork — track wear.

Common questions about the Subaru Forester

How much does a used Subaru Forester cost in Singapore?
Most used Subaru Forester on the market are around 8 years old, asking roughly S$39k–S$57k (typically about S$43k). That's the age with the widest choice — and the most sellers competing, so it's where you'll have the most room to bargain.
How much does a used Subaru Forester depreciate per year?
A used Subaru Forester loses value at a fairly steady pace — around 25% a year — with no real plateau. An older one costs less but keeps falling at much the same rate, so there's no single 'bargain age': buy on price and condition, not on timing.
Is the Subaru Forester reliable?
In our read, the Subaru Forester scores 78 out of 100 on brand reliability. That still varies by generation and how the individual car was looked after, so always check the service history before you commit.
What should I expect to pay for a used Subaru Forester with a given mileage?
It depends on the exact variant, age and mileage — a higher-mileage car should ask less. Use the price modeller on this page to get a fair-price range for a specific age and mileage, so you know what to offer.
Where do these Subaru Forester figures come from?
They're worked out from current used-Subaru Forester listings in Singapore — asking prices, mileage and registration years — not past transaction prices. We refresh them regularly, and we flag thin data rather than guess.
